Mark Lowrie, esteemed broadcast journalism teacher at Gahanna Lincoln High School, has been named the 2024 Ohio Teacher of the Year by the Ohio Department of Education. Lowrie’s journey to this prestigious title is one marked by dedication, innovation and a profound commitment to his students.
Previously, Lowrie spent 18 years at Steele High School in Amherst, where he honed his craft and made a lasting impact on countless students. His transition to Gahanna Lincoln High School five years ago brought new opportunities to inspire and empower young minds through the power of journalism and storytelling.
Under Lowrie’s guidance, the broadcast journalism program at Gahanna Lincoln High School has achieved remarkable success, earning national recognition for its outstanding achievements. The live newscasts produced by his students, known as Lincoln Live, have garnered an impressive array of accolades, including seven national student production awards and 79 regional student production awards. In 2022, the program led the nation in Student Emmys with three wins, including the coveted Best Newscast award.
Lowrie’s impact extends beyond the classroom. He has designed four new courses at Gahanna Lincoln High School and significantly increased enrollment in the broadcast journalism program, providing students with valuable skills and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
In addition to his local recognition, Lowrie will represent Ohio in the National Teacher of the Year competition, showcasing the exceptional talent and dedication of educators in the state.
Reflecting on his achievement, Lowrie expressed gratitude for his students, stating, “These kids work tirelessly. They come in before school, they give up their lunch periods. They have strict deadlines, just like a regular TV station would.”
