Course Overview

This course introduces students to the rich history, culture, achievements, and contributions of African Americans from ancient Africa to the present day. Students will explore how African Americans have shaped the history, government, economy, arts, sciences, and culture of the United States while examining the challenges they faced and the resilience they demonstrated throughout history.

Through engaging lessons, primary sources, biographies, projects, and discussions, students will develop historical thinking skills and gain a deeper understanding of the individuals, movements, and events that helped shape America. The course emphasizes critical thinking, cultural awareness, civic responsibility, and appreciation for diverse perspectives.

Students will investigate themes of identity, freedom, equality, leadership, innovation, and social change while connecting historical events to contemporary issues and their own lives.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:
