African American History Grade 5

Purpose

The purpose of this Grade 5 course, Voices of Freedom: African American History, is to help students understand the full and continuous story of African American history—from African civilizations to modern-day contributions. The course is designed to build historical understanding, cultural awareness, and critical thinking by showing how African American experiences have shaped the United States and the world. It emphasizes identity, resilience, leadership, and achievement across time.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe early African civilizations such as Mali, Songhai, Aksum, and Kush, and explain their contributions to trade, culture, and leadership.
  2. Explain the causes and effects of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, including the Middle Passage and its impact on African societies and people.
  3. Identify key figures and events in the struggle for freedom, including abolitionists, the Underground Railroad, and the Civil War.
  4. Explain life during Reconstruction and segregation, including the development of Jim Crow laws and responses from African American communities.
  5. Describe major events and leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, including strategies used to achieve equality and justice.
  6. Recognize the contributions of African Americans in modern society, including achievements in science, arts, sports, politics, and education.
