Course Overview
Grade 2 English Language Arts builds a strong foundation in literacy by systematically developing students’ understanding of the written word. Students learn through a structured, sequential approach that moves from the basic building blocks of language to the creation of their own written and oral expressions. This course covers the essential components of reading and writing, including phonics, word study, grammar, sentence construction, vocabulary, and comprehension, culminating in the ability to research and write about topics of interest.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the alphabetic principle by accurately identifying and using all letters, their sounds, and their order.
- Apply phonics and word study skills to decode and encode unfamiliar words, including those with common vowel patterns, blends, and digraphs.
- Identify and correctly use the eight parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, in their writing and speech.
- Construct complete, clear sentences that include a subject and a predicate and demonstrate a variety of purposes (e.g., statement, question, exclamation).
- Apply standard conventions of capitalization and punctuation in their writing, including proper nouns, sentence beginnings, and common punctuation marks.
- Expand their vocabulary by using context clues, understanding word relationships, and learning grade-appropriate academic and content-specific words.
- Read and comprehend a variety of grade-level texts, demonstrating the ability to summarize, retell, and identify key details and main ideas.
- Plan, draft, revise, and publish simple pieces of writing, including narratives, informative texts, and opinion pieces.
- Use basic research skills to gather information from multiple sources and present findings in a simple report.
Course Units
Unit 1: Alphabet
This unit reviews and reinforces foundational knowledge of the alphabet. Students will practice the correct formation and recognition of uppercase and lowercase letters, solidify letter-sound correspondence, and understand alphabetical order, all of which are essential for future reading and dictionary skills.
Unit 2: Phonics
Students will develop the ability to decode words by breaking them down into their component sounds. This unit focuses on consonant and short vowel sounds, then progresses to long vowels, consonant blends, digraphs, and common spelling patterns to build fluency in reading and spelling.
Unit 3: Word Study
Building on phonics, this unit introduces students to more complex word structures. Students will learn about syllables, compound words, contractions, and the spelling rules for adding common suffixes and prefixes, helping them to read and spell multi-syllabic words with greater ease.
Unit 4: Parts of Speech
Students will be introduced to the building blocks of grammar. This unit focuses on identifying and understanding the function of key parts of speech: nouns (common, proper, and plural), verbs (action and being), adjectives, and adverbs, enabling students to enrich their descriptive language.
Unit 5: Sentences
Students will learn how to construct grammatically correct and varied sentences. This unit covers complete sentences (subject and predicate), the four types of sentences (declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory), and how to combine simple sentences to improve their writing flow.
Unit 6: Capitalization
This unit establishes the rules of capitalization. Students will learn to always capitalize the first word of a sentence, the pronoun “I,” and proper nouns, including the names of people, days, months, and holidays, ensuring their writing follows standard conventions.
Unit 7: Punctuation
Students will explore the role of punctuation in clarifying meaning. This unit focuses on correct usage of periods, question marks, exclamation points, and commas in a series and dates, teaching students how to use these tools to guide the reader and enhance their writing.
Unit 8: Vocabulary
Students will expand their vocabulary through intentional word study. This unit includes using context clues to determine word meaning, understanding shades of meaning, learning homophones and synonyms/antonyms, and applying grade-level academic vocabulary in their speaking and writing.
Unit 9: Reading & Writing
This integrated unit allows students to apply their literacy skills in context. Students will engage in close reading of fiction and non-fiction texts, participating in discussions and answering questions about the text. They will also apply their grammar and mechanics skills to plan, write, revise, and publish narratives, opinion pieces, and informative texts.
Unit 10: Research Skills
Students are introduced to the process of gathering and presenting information. This unit will guide students in asking and answering a research question by using multiple sources (e.g., books, articles, digital media). Students will learn to organize information and present their findings in a simple, clear written or oral report.
