Manu'a High School's Konelio Alofaituli Wins 2023 American Samoa Teacher of the Year Award  Konelio Alofaituli, an outstanding educator at Manu’a High School, Ta’u Island in Manu’atele, has been named the 2023 American Samoa Teacher of the Year. This prestigious recognition celebrates his exceptional contributions to the field of education.

“I’m so inspired that people are so grateful for the work that we do. The validation is just incredible,” said Alofaituli, reflecting on the honor of being named American Samoa Teacher of the Year.

Born and raised in California, Konelio Alofaituli’s journey led him to American Samoa in 1992, where he found his calling as an educator. Embracing the tropical birthplace of his parents, he became deeply connected to the rich cultural heritage of the Polynesian people. Currently teaching social studies at Manu’a High School, Alofaituli has made it his mission to foster cultural understanding and appreciation among his students, empowering them to connect with their roots and embrace their ancestral legacy.

Alofaituli’s educational achievements are testament to his commitment to personal and professional growth. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from the University of Hawai’I and a Master of Arts in curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix. He is currently pursuing a doctorate, demonstrating his relentless pursuit of knowledge and his dedication to enhancing his teaching practices.

“I hated how you compelled me to wear my uniform properly. I hated how you pushed me to speak correctly. This period was important to my development. You instilled in me discipline. You taught me the importance of respect,” shared Levaleai Maligi, a former student of Alofaituli. Such testimonies highlight the transformative influence Alofaituli has had on his students, instilling discipline and imparting valuable life skills.

Beyond the classroom, the 2023 American Samoa Teacher of the Year’s influence extends to his role as an ordained licensed minister with the Full Gospel Association. His musical talents and spiritual convictions have allowed him to serve as a music minister for many years, touching the lives of those around him. With over four decades of experience as a Sunday school teacher, Alofaituli has nurtured the spiritual growth and moral development of countless individuals.

When asked about his approach to teaching, Alofaituli emphasizes the importance of instilling a hunger for truth and equipping students with the skills to pursue it. He believes in empowering his students with critical thinking abilities and fostering curiosity. Alofaituli understands that education encompasses more than textbooks and classrooms; it involves holistic development, nurturing students’ intellectual, emotional, and cultural growth.

As the 2023 American Samoa Teacher of the Year, Konelio Alofaituli will represent the American Samoa in the National Teacher of the Year competition. This well-deserved recognition is a testament to his unwavering dedication and the transformative power of his teaching.
