Using Context Clues to Determine Word Meanings
📖 What This Section is About:
This section teaches students how to use clues in the sentence or paragraph around an unfamiliar word to figure out its meaning. Instead of always relying on a dictionary, students learn to think critically and read closely to make educated guesses about words based on how they’re used in context.
🎯 Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Identify unfamiliar words in a sentence or passage.
Use context clues (definitions, synonyms, antonyms, examples, or restatements) to infer word meanings.
Explain how they figured out the meaning using the surrounding text.
Recognize different types of context clues (e.g., synonym, antonym, explanation, example).
Apply this skill to improve reading comprehension.
✍️ Examples:
Sentence Example 1 – Definition Clue:
The desert is arid, which means it is very dry and gets little rainfall.
👉 Clue: “which means” signals a definition.
Sentence Example 2 – Synonym Clue:
She was elated, or very happy, when she won the art contest.
👉 Clue: “or very happy” gives a synonym.
Sentence Example 3 – Example Clue:
Carnivores, such as lions, tigers, and wolves, eat meat.
👉 Clue: “such as lions, tigers…” gives examples of carnivores.
