Types of Mixtures and Solutions | Fourth Grade Science
📖 What the Section Is About
This section helps students understand that mixtures can be made by combining different materials. Some mixtures can be easily separated, while others form solutions that are harder to take apart. Students will learn the difference between mixtures and solutions and how to recognize each type.
🎯 Learning Objectives
✅ Define what a mixture is
✅ Explain what a solution is and how it forms
✅ Compare mixtures and solutions using everyday examples
✅ Identify ways to separate different types of mixtures
🧪 Examples of Mixtures and Solutions
• Mixing sand and marbles (mixture)
• Stirring sugar into water (solution)
• Salad with lettuce and tomatoes (mixture)
• Salt dissolved in water (solution)
🧂 Identify Mixtures of Solids and Ways to Separate Them
A mixture is made when two or more substances are combined but do not change into something new. In solid mixtures, the parts keep their own properties and can be separated easily. Mixtures are found in many places, like in trail mix, soil, or a bowl of cereal with marshmallows. Solids in a mixture can be different in size, color, shape, or texture. For example, a mixture of sand and gravel shows two different types of solids. A handful of coins and paper clips is another kind of mixture. Each part can be picked out without changing it.
There are several ways to separate solid mixtures. One way is by using your hands to sort large pieces, like picking raisins out of cereal. Another way is by using a sieve or strainer, which lets smaller solids fall through while larger pieces stay behind. Magnets can also help if one of the solids is metal, such as separating iron filings from salt. By observing the properties of solids, scientists and students can choose the best method to separate them. Learning to identify and separate mixtures helps us in science labs, recycling centers, and even in the kitchen. It shows how matter can be combined and still stay the same.
📘 Key Vocabulary and Definitions
• Mixture – A combination of two or more substances that can still be separated
• Solution – A type of mixture where one substance dissolves in another
• Dissolve – When a substance mixes completely with a liquid
• Separate – To take apart the substances in a mixture
• Solute – The substance that dissolves
• Solvent – The liquid that does the dissolving

🏡 Offline Homework Idea: “Mixture Hunt”
Look around your kitchen or home and find 2 mixtures and 2 solutions.
Draw or list each one and label whether it is a mixture or a solution.
Try to explain how you could separate each one if needed!
