What Is Theme? (Grade 5)
Theme is the big idea or message the author wants the reader to learn from a story. It’s not just what happens — it’s what the story teaches.
Unlike the main idea (what the story is mostly about), the theme is the lesson or life truth behind the events.
Common themes include:
Friendship
Honesty
Bravery
Kindness
Never give up
Hard work pays off
📘 Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Identify the theme of a fictional story. (RL.5.2)
Use story details (characters, setting, events) to support a theme.
Differentiate between the main idea and theme of a story.
Write a short story that expresses a clear theme.
✏️ Short Story: “The Last Marble”
Tariq had one marble left. It was shiny blue and his favorite. He had won it in a fair game, and he carried it everywhere.
At recess, he saw Diego sitting alone. Diego looked upset. When Tariq asked what was wrong, Diego said his backpack had been stolen—and with it, his only marble. He had just started collecting them.
Tariq looked down at his blue marble. He thought for a moment. Then he handed it to Diego.
“Start your new collection,” Tariq said, smiling.
Diego’s face lit up.
