Counting by ones

About the Lesson
Counting is like building a staircase—each step comes right after the one before it. Students will become “Number Builders” who practice counting forward by ones, starting at any number, all the way up to 100 (and toward 120 for Common Core). They will also see how numbers are made of tens and ones, and use number lines, objects, and drawings to represent numbers.
This lesson builds strong number sense, fluency, and confidence!

📌 Counting Everyday Objects
“My Apples”
→ Beginning: “I picked 11 apples.”
→ Middle: “Then I picked one more: 12.”
→ End: “Finally I counted: 13 apples!”

📌 Number Line Order
“The Frog Jumps”
→ First: “It hops on 27.”
→ Next: “It hops to 28.”
→ Last: “It lands on 29.”

📌 Place Value Talk
“14”
→ First: “That’s one ten.”
→ Next: “Plus four ones.”
→ Last: “Together, that makes 14.”

Learning Objectives
