Counting by ones
About the Lesson
Counting is like building a staircase—each step comes right after the one before it. Students will become “Number Builders” who practice counting forward by ones, starting at any number, all the way up to 100 (and toward 120 for Common Core). They will also see how numbers are made of tens and ones, and use number lines, objects, and drawings to represent numbers.
This lesson builds strong number sense, fluency, and confidence!
Examples
📌 Counting Everyday Objects
“My Apples”
→ Beginning: “I picked 11 apples.”
→ Middle: “Then I picked one more: 12.”
→ End: “Finally I counted: 13 apples!”
📌 Number Line Order
“The Frog Jumps”
→ First: “It hops on 27.”
→ Next: “It hops to 28.”
→ Last: “It lands on 29.”
📌 Place Value Talk
“14”
→ First: “That’s one ten.”
→ Next: “Plus four ones.”
→ Last: “Together, that makes 14.”
Learning Objectives
✅ Count forward by ones to 100 (OAS) and toward 120 (CCSS).
✅ Start counting from any number, not just 1.
✅ Read and write numbers using numerals, objects, and number lines.
✅ Understand tens and ones (place value).
✅ Practice skip-counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s (OAS extension).
✅ Compare numbers as more than/less than using number lines.
Fun Practice Activities
1. Counting Worksheet ✏️
Part 1: Fill in missing numbers (e.g., “45, __, 47, __, 49”).
Part 2: Draw tens & ones (e.g., “Show 23: 2 tens + 3 ones”).
🔍 Worksheet Answer Key: Review by counting aloud together.
2. Interactive Number Builder Quiz 🏗️
Materials: Number cards (1–120), counters, number line
Number Order Challenge:
“What comes AFTER 56?”
a) 55
b) 57
c) 60
→ Action: Students hold up “57” card and shout: “One more than 56 is 57!”
Missing Number Slam:
“Complete: 78, __, 80”
a) 79
b) 77
c) 81
→ Action: Write answer on whiteboards (79).
Place Value Reveal:
Show 4 tens + 2 ones (base-ten blocks). Ask: “What number?”
→ Answer: 42.
Skip-Count Fun:
Count by 5s together: “5, 10, 15, 20 …” Students clap on each multiple of 5.
Number Fixer:
“Fix this sequence: 33, 35, 34, 36”
→ Action: Students reorder themselves while chanting:
“33, 34, 35, 36!”
Offline Homework: Counting Flip Book 📖
📝 Instructions:
Choose a theme (e.g., toys, pets, snacks).
Create Flip Book:
Page 1: Draw/Write 41 things (“41 = 4 tens + 1 one”)
Page 2: Next number (“42 = 4 tens + 2 ones”)
Page 3: Next number (“43 = 4 tens + 3 ones”)
Add Number Tabs: Green=ones, Yellow=tens.
Share: Present to family by counting aloud and showing tens/ones drawings.
This lesson transforms students into confident Number Builders who can count, read, and represent numbers in order, building a strong foundation for place value and problem-solving.
