Petal High School’s 11th grade United States history educator Skye Morgan has been recognized as the 2023 Mississippi Teacher of the Year by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) and Office of Teaching and Leading. The announcement was made during a ceremony held in Jackson, where Morgan was honored for her outstanding dedication to teaching and inspiring her students.
Expressing her gratitude, Morgan said, “I am beyond honored to serve as the Mississippi Teacher of the Year and excited to represent Mississippi on the national stage. I look forward to meeting and working with amazing educators within our state and across the nation.” Her enthusiasm and commitment to education have earned her the prestigious title and the opportunity to make a difference on a larger scale.
The Mississippi Teacher of the Year program aims to acknowledge exceptional educators who not only inspire their students but also demonstrate leadership both inside and outside the classroom while actively engaging with their communities. As the State Teacher of the Year, Morgan will share her expertise through presentations, professional development sessions, and activities aimed at improving education. Additionally, she will receive a $5,000 stipend and represent Mississippi in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
Dr. Matt Dillon, the superintendent of the Petal School District, expressed his pride in Morgan’s achievement, stating, “We are so Panther Proud that Skye Morgan has been selected as the Mississippi Teacher of the Year. Our district is fortunate to already have two teachers of the year for our state, and we are delighted to add Skye to that list. She is incredibly deserving of this honor and will represent our district and the State of Mississippi very well.”
Prior to being named Mississippi’s Teacher of the Year, Morgan had already received several accolades, including Petal High School Teacher of the Year, Petal School District Teacher of the Year, and being a finalist for Congressional District 4 Teacher of the Year. These honors reflect her exceptional contributions to education and the impact she has made in her students’ lives.
