D.C. Teacher of the Year Jermar Rountree Nominated for National Teacher of the Year

D.C. Teacher of the Year Jermar Rountree Nominated for National Teacher of the Year A Washington D.C. teacher has been announced as one of the four finalists for the 2023 National Teacher of the Year award. Jermar Rountree, who has already been named the 2023 D.C. Teacher of the Year, is being honored for his innovative teaching style that emphasizes physical activity and wellness in students’ lives. Rountree teaches health and physical education at Center City Public Charter School’s Brightwood campus for pre-K to eighth-grade students.

Rountree’s approach to teaching aims to foster a positive and inclusive environment that encourages students to take ownership of their health and wellness. He believes that staying active and taking care of oneself not only positively impacts physical health but also mental health and overall well-being. His dedication to his students has earned him praise from colleagues and school administrators, who see him as a role model for the school community.

“We are so lucky to have Jermar as a teacher here,” said Rachel Tommelleo, principal at Center City PCS-Brightwood. “He goes above and beyond for our students, his colleagues, and our community members every single day. He wants everyone to be successful and feel supported. He is a huge part of why our students are excited to come to school every day. We are who we are because of dedicated teachers like Coach Rountree.”

Reacting to the news of being named a finalist, Rountree expressed his gratitude and humility. He hopes that the recognition will help promote the importance of physical education and wellness in schools. “I believe that when we prioritize our health and wellness, we are better equipped to succeed academically and in all aspects of our lives,” he said.

The National Teacher of the Year award is presented annually by the Council of Chief State School Officers to recognize excellence in teaching and to promote the teaching profession. The winner will be announced in the spring of 2023, and Rountree sees this recognition as an opportunity to share his passion for teaching and highlight the importance of health and wellness in education.
