Column Addition
What It Is About:
Column addition is a method of adding numbers by lining them up vertically according to their place values (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.). In Grade 2, students begin to use this format to clearly organize and solve addition problems, especially when adding two-digit or three-digit numbers. It helps reinforce place value understanding and prepares students for more advanced addition.
Learning Outcomes:
-
Understand how to align numbers by place value in columns.
-
Accurately add two-digit and three-digit numbers using the column method.
-
Recognize the importance of place value (ones, tens, hundreds) in addition.
-
Develop neatness, organization, and accuracy in written math work.

Offline Homework Idea: “Grocery List Addition”
Instructions for Students/Parents:
Create a pretend grocery list with item prices written as two-digit numbers (e.g., Bread – 25, Milk – 40, Eggs – 36). Ask your child to choose any two or three items and use column addition to find the total cost.
Have them write the numbers neatly in columns (ones under ones, tens under tens) and solve the addition on paper.
Extension (Optional):
Let your child make their own grocery list with prices and challenge a family member to solve it using column addition.
