 Zuni Pueblo Educator Roy Biñas Basa Honored as 2024 New Mexico Teacher of the Year In a testament to his unwavering commitment to educational excellence and innovation, Roy Biñas Basa has been named the 2024 New Mexico Teacher of the Year. The announcement, made by the New Mexico Public Education Department in partnership with the New Mexico Gas and Oil Association, celebrates Basa’s remarkable contributions to the field of education and his role as a transformative leader in the classroom.

Basa’s journey to this prestigious accolade is marked by distinction and a deep passion for lifelong learning. Holding a Ph.D. and Master in Educational Management from the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in the Philippines, among other degrees, Basa’s academic qualifications are extensive. His commitment to professional growth is evident through certifications such as TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and an International Teaching License, reflecting his dedication to providing equitable access to quality education.

As an educator at Twin Buttes Cyber Academy in the Zuni Pueblo, Basa embodies innovation in education. The school’s alternative paths to graduation, blending online learning, in-person instruction and specialized career learning, provide students with diverse opportunities for success. Basa’s teaching methodology, emphasizing hands-on scientific exploration and engineering innovation, has yielded notable achievements for his students, including success in prestigious competitions like the 2022 New Mexico Governor’s STEM Challenge and the International HOSA International Research Competition.

Reflecting on his teaching philosophy, Basa remarked, “Education is one of the most potent tools for elevating our economic and social status.” His approach integrates diverse fields of expertise, catering to a wide range of student needs and interests.
