St. Charles Parish Educator Brittany Bonnaffons Named 2023 Louisiana Teacher of the Year

St. Charles Parish Educator Brittany Bonnaffons Named 2023 Louisiana Teacher of the Year Brittany Bonnaffons has been named the 2023 Louisiana State Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made by the Louisiana Department of Education, alongside the 2023 State Principal of the Year, Dr. David Schexnaydre, Jr. of Harry M. Hurst Middle School. Bonnaffons has been a teacher for eleven years and currently teaches ninth-grade Algebra 1 at Hahnville High School in in St. Charles Parish, where she also serves as the head track coach.

“I am extremely honored to represent the teachers here in Louisiana,” Bonnaffons said. “Words cannot express it. I truly hope to represent all teachers well and to be a voice and a light for the profession. My platform is about making room for students to shine – helping students and teachers to find joy. This is the beginning of a beautiful year that I hope highlights the St. Charles community as well as the teaching profession.”

Brittany Bonnaffons is deeply grateful for the support she has received from her community, including her family, colleagues, and students. She expressed her appreciation for her track coaching staff, who she said were crucial to any success she has achieved. As the 2023 Louisiana State Teacher of the Year, she will represent Louisiana in the National Teacher of the Year program. She will also serve as an ambassador for the teaching profession, advocating for policies and programs that support educators and students.

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley congratulated Bonnaffons and Schexnaydre on their achievements, stating: “I would like to extend my personal congratulations to Brittany and David and thank them on behalf of the entire Department. I look forward to celebrating with them and all honorees at what I expect to be a fantastic night for Louisiana educators.”

Bonnaffons is a highly accomplished educator who has dedicated her career to helping students achieve academic success. She has a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Louisiana Scholars’ College at Northwestern State University, a Master of Science in business administration from Louisiana State University, a Master of Science in exercise science from the University of Louisiana Monroe, and a Master of Arts in teaching from Northwestern University.

Brittany Bonnaffons’ selection as the 2023 Louisiana State Teacher of the Year highlights her dedication to her profession, her students, and her community. Her platform of making room for students to shine and helping students and teachers find joy will undoubtedly inspire others to support and advocate for the teaching profession.

“Teachers are gifts. I hope to show as many of those gifts to the world as I can – my gifts and the gifts of other teachers who also deserve a moment in the spotlight,” Bonnafons said. “I love my co-workers and administration. I know that I am never going into new ventures – or even old ventures – blindly.”
