What This Section Is About:
In this section, you will learn how to use context clues to figure out the meaning of unknown words. Context clues are the words and sentences around a tricky word that give hints about what it means.

What Are Context Clues? Context clues help us understand new words without using a dictionary!

Here are some types of context clues:
• Definition clues – The sentence explains the word.
o Example: A habitat, or home, is where an animal lives.

• Synonym clues – A similar word is used nearby.
o Example: The baby was joyful and happy.

• Antonym clues – The sentence includes a word with the opposite meaning.
o Example: The water was shallow, not deep.

• Example clues – The sentence gives an example of the word.
o Example: Many animals hibernate in winter, like bears, bats, and snakes.
