Understanding Letter-Sounds (RF.1.3)
In this section, you’ll learn 5 letter-sounds: Consonant Sounds, Short Vowel Sounds, Long Vowel Sounds, Digraphs, and
Diphthongs.
I. Consonant Sounds
Consonant sounds are speech sounds produced when airflow is partially or completely blocked by the lips, teeth, or tongue.
There are 24 consonant sounds in English, even though there are only 21 consonant letters. The consonant letters are:
b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z.
Activities
1. Video Activity
• Watch the video on consonant sounds to learn how to recognize and distinguish different consonant sounds.
• After watching, pronounce the words from the video.
2. Worksheet Activity
• Do consonant sounds worksheet activity to help to help you identify and write consonant sounds and their corresponding letters.
• After completing the worksheet, pronounce the words. Seek assistance where necessary.
3. Interactive Practice Quiz
• Complete a practice quiz on consonant sounds.
• The quiz will help you identify and write consonant sounds and letters
• After the quiz, pronounce the words.
II. Short Vowel Sounds
Short vowel sounds are the sounds that vowels (a, e, i, o, u) make when they are pronounced in their shortest and most basic form. These sounds occur when a vowel is followed by a consonant in a closed syllable (e.g., “cat,” “bed,” “pig,” “dog,” “sun”). Short vowels are essential in early reading and phonics development because they help students decode simple words.
Activities for Learning Short Vowel Sounds
1. Video Activity
• Have students watch an engaging video that introduces short vowel sounds using animated examples and word associations.
• Encourage students to repeat the words and sounds they hear in the video.
• After watching, ask students to identify words with short vowel sounds and practice saying them aloud.
2. Worksheet Activity
• Download a worksheet with exercises such as matching pictures to words, filling in missing vowels, or sorting words based on their short vowel sounds.
• Complete the worksheet independently or in small groups.
• After completion, review the answers together and reinforce pronunciation.
3. Interactive Activity (Practice Quiz)
• Click a link to access a digital practice quiz where students identify short vowel sounds in different words.
• Select words with short vowel sounds.
• After the quiz, review the answers. How did you do?
III. Long Vowel Sounds
Long vowel sounds occur when vowels (a, e, i, o, u) say their name rather than their short sound. These sounds often appear in words with silent “e” (e.g., “cake,” “ride,” “hope”), vowel teams (e.g., “boat,” “rain,” “team”), or open syllables (e.g., “me,” “go”). Learning long vowel sounds is essential for reading fluency and spelling accuracy.
Activities for Learning Long Vowel Sounds
1. Video Activity
• Show students a fun, engaging video that introduces long vowel sounds with animated visuals and real-word examples.
• Have students repeat words from the video to practice pronunciation.
• Pause the video at key points to discuss patterns, such as silent “e” or vowel teams.
2. Worksheet Activity
• Provide a worksheet with exercises like sorting short and long vowel words, filling in missing vowels, and matching words to pictures.
• Have students complete the worksheet independently or with a partner.
• Review answers together, focusing on the spelling patterns that create long vowel sounds.
3. Interactive Activity (Practice Quiz)
• Design a practice quiz where students identify long vowel sounds in different words.
• Include word-matching exercises, multiple-choice questions, or listening activities where students select words with long vowel sounds.
• After the quiz, review the answers together and have students read the words aloud to reinforce pronunciation.
IV. Digraphs
When a letter makes more than one sound, or when two letters combine to create a single sound, they form digraphs. Digraphs are pairs of letters that represent one phoneme (sound) rather than their individual letter sounds.
Examples of Digraphs
1. Consonant Digraphs (Two Consonants, One Sound):
• sh – ship
• ch – chat
• th – thin (soft th) / this (hard th)
• wh – whale
• ph – phone
2. Vowel Digraphs (Two Vowels, One Sound):
• ea – bread
• oa – boat
• ai – rain
• ee – tree
Activities
1. Video Activity
• Watch a video on digraphs to help you recognize and distinguish different consonant and vowel digraphs.
• After watching, pronounce the words from the video.
2. Worksheet Activity
• Do a digraphs worksheet activity to help identify, write, and differentiate digraph sounds in words.
• After completing the worksheet, read aloud the words to reinforce pronunciation.
3. Interactive Practice Quiz
• Practice an interactive quiz activity on digraphs to test your ability to identify and use digraphs in words.
• The quiz will reinforce both recognition and spelling of words containing digraphs.
• After the quiz, read aloud the words to strengthen phonemic awareness
V. Diphthongs
A diphthong is a vowel sound that begins as one vowel sound and glides into another within the same syllable. Unlike short and long vowels, diphthongs create a blended sound, making them unique and essential for pronunciation and fluency.
Common Diphthongs:
• /oi/ sound: as in “boil,” “toy” (spelled oi, oy)
• /ou/ sound: as in “cloud,” “cow” (spelled ou, ow)
• /ea/ sound: as in “beak,” “fear” (spelled ea)
• /ai/ sound: as in “train,” “rain” (spelled ai, ay)
Activities for Learning Diphthongs
1. Video Activity
• Watch a video introducing diphthongs with examples in everyday words.
• Listen carefully and repeat the words after the video.
• Pause and discuss how the vowel sounds change as they are pronounced.
2. Worksheet Activity
• Do a worksheet activity:
o Sort words into categories based on diphthong sounds.
o Fill in missing diphthongs to complete words.
o Match words to pictures that represent their meaning.
• Read aloud the answers to reinforce pronunciation.
3. Interactive Activity (Practice Quiz)
• Click a link to do a practice quiz:
o Identify diphthongs in spoken and written words.
o Choose the correct diphthong to complete words.
o Match words with similar diphthong sounds.
• After the quiz, review answers and say the words aloud.
