Syllables and Multisyllabic Words

This lesson introduces students to syllablesâthe basic “beats” in spoken wordsâand helps them recognize and break down multisyllabic words (words with more than one syllable). Understanding syllables improves spelling, reading fluency, and pronunciation.
đ Vocabulary:
Syllable: A unit of sound in a word that contains a vowel sound. Itâs like one âbeatâ of a word.
Example: cat = 1 syllable, happy = 2 syllables
Multisyllabic Word: A word that has more than one syllable.
Example: elephant (el-e-phant) = 3 syllables, banana (ba-na-na) = 3 syllables
