Example: Solving a Word Problem

🔹 Problem: Sarah has 12 apples. She gives 5 apples to her friend. How many apples does she have left?

Step 1: Read the problem carefully.
Step 2: Identify important information:

Total apples = 12

Apples given away = 5

We need to find how many apples are left.

Step 3: The word “left” means we need to subtract.
Step 4: Write the equation: 12 – 5 = ?
Step 5: Solve: 12 – 5 = 7
Step 6: Check: If Sarah started with 12 apples and gave away 5, she should have 7 apples left.
