Reading Maps
A map is a drawing or representation of a place. Maps help us understand where places and things are located. A map can show a classroom, neighborhood, city, state, country, or part of the world.
Maps have different parts that help us read them. A map title tells us what the map shows. Labels give the names of places or features. A map key, also called a legend, explains what symbols on the map mean.
A compass rose shows directions. The four main directions are north, south, east, and west. Directions help us describe where one place is compared with another.
Some maps also use a scale to show distance. A scale helps us understand how far apart places are.
To read a map, first look at the title. Then look at the key, labels, and compass rose. Use these parts together to find places and understand the information shown on the map.
