What It’s About:
Students learn how prefixes (beginnings) and suffixes (endings) change the meanings of base words to create new words.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify common prefixes (un-, re-, pre-, dis-) and suffixes (-ful, -less, -ly, -ment).

  2. Understand how prefixes change the meaning of a word.

  3. Understand how suffixes change the function or meaning of a word.

  4. Use words with prefixes and suffixes correctly in sentences.

Examples:

  • Prefix: happy → unhappy (not happy)

  • Prefix: write → rewrite (write again)

  • Suffix: care → careful (full of care)

  • Suffix: enjoy → enjoyment
