What It’s About:
Students practice distinguishing statements that can be proven (facts) from those that are based on feelings or beliefs (opinions).

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify facts in nonfiction texts.

  2. Identify opinions in nonfiction texts.

  3. Explain why a statement is a fact or an opinion.

  4. Write their own fact and opinion statements about a topic.

Examples:

  • Fact: “The Earth revolves around the Sun.”

  • Opinion: “Science is the most interesting subject.”

  • Fact: “George Washington was the first U.S. president.”

  • Opinion: “Dogs are the best pets.”
