🔢🏠 Fact Families and Properties
📖 What the Section Is About
In this section, students learn about fact families — sets of related addition and subtraction facts or multiplication and division facts. They also explore important properties of numbers that help make math easier, such as the commutative, associative, and identity properties. Understanding these concepts builds a strong foundation for mental math and problem-solving.
🎯 Learning Objectives
✅ Identify and create fact families for addition/subtraction and multiplication/division
✅ Understand and apply the commutative, associative, and identity properties
✅ Use fact families to check answers and solve problems faster
✅ Recognize patterns in numbers and operations
🧮 Examples of Fact Families in Action
Addition/Subtraction fact family for 7, 3, and 10:
• 7 + 3 = 10
• 3 + 7 = 10
• 10 − 7 = 3
• 10 − 3 = 7
Multiplication/Division fact family for 4, 6, and 24:
• 4 × 6 = 24
• 6 × 4 = 24
• 24 ÷ 6 = 4
• 24 ÷ 4 = 6
🔢 Understanding Fact Families and Properties
A fact family shows how numbers are related through different operations. In addition and subtraction families, the largest number is always the sum. In multiplication and division families, the largest number is always the product.
Number properties help us understand how numbers work:
• Commutative Property – You can change the order of numbers in addition or multiplication and still get the same answer (3 + 5 = 5 + 3, 2 × 4 = 4 × 2).
• Associative Property – You can change the grouping of numbers in addition or multiplication and still get the same answer ((2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4)).
• Identity Property – Adding 0 or multiplying by 1 does not change a number (8 + 0 = 8, 9 × 1 = 9).
📘 Key Vocabulary and Definitions
• Fact family – A group of related math facts using the same numbers
• Commutative Property – Changing the order does not change the sum or product
• Associative Property – Changing the grouping does not change the sum or product
• Identity Property – Adding 0 or multiplying by 1 keeps the number the same
• Operation – A math action like addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division
