Determining the Author’s Purpose in Texts -Grade Level: 5
📖 What the Section Is About:
This section teaches students how to identify why an author wrote a text. Students will learn to recognize if the author’s purpose is to persuade, inform, entertain, or explain (PIEE). They will analyze short texts, paragraphs, and media clips to determine the purpose using evidence from the content, tone, and language.
🎯 Learning Objectives:
By the end of this section, students will be able to:
Define the four main author’s purposes: persuade, inform, entertain, and explain.
Identify the author’s purpose in a variety of texts using clues from the title, vocabulary, and content.
Justify their reasoning with evidence from the text.
Compare how different texts with similar topics can have different purposes.
