Using Descriptive Details and Dialogue (Grade 5) ELA

What Is It / Overview:
In narrative writing, descriptive details help readers picture what is happening, while dialogue shows how characters think, feel, and interact. Grade 5 students learn to add sensory language (what things look, sound, smell, feel, or taste like) and realistic conversations to make their stories more vivid and engaging. These tools help bring characters and scenes to life.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

Use sensory and descriptive details to show characters, settings, and events.

Use dialogue to reveal character thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Format and punctuate dialogue correctly in writing.

Revise writing to improve clarity and detail.

Short Passage: “The Lost Dog”
Jada ran through the neighborhood, her heart pounding.
“Benny!” she called, her voice trembling. “Where are you, boy?”
The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the empty sidewalk. A cool breeze rustled the leaves, and the only sound was the echo of her footsteps.
Just then, a bark came from behind the old shed.
“Benny?” Jada whispered, stepping closer.
Suddenly, the little brown dog darted out, tail wagging.
“There you are!” she cried, dropping to her knees. “I was so scared!”

Descriptive Details:

“Her heart pounding”

“The sun was setting, casting long shadows…”

“A cool breeze rustled the leaves”

Dialogue:
